It is a tricyclic &lt;a href="http://www.rxlist.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=38400"&gt;glycopeptide &lt;/a&gt;   &lt;a href="http://www.rxlist.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=8121"&gt;antibiotic&lt;/a&gt; derived from&lt;i&gt; Amycolatopsis orientalis&lt;/i&gt; (formerly &lt;i&gt;Nocardia   orientalis&lt;/i&gt;). The molecular formula is C&lt;sub&gt;66&lt;/sub&gt;H&lt;sub&gt;75&lt;/sub&gt;C&lt;sub&gt;l2&lt;/sub&gt;N&lt;sub&gt;9&lt;/sub&gt;O&lt;sub&gt;24&lt;/sub&gt;•HCl   and the molecular weight is 1,485.71. 500 mg of the base is equivalent to 0.34   mmol. Thawed solutions have a pH in the range of 3.0 to 5.0.
